English language programs

The Australian Museum is a stimulating learning environment for students learning English as a second language and can be used to:

• encourage students to use public institutions in Australia and view them as accessible community resources
• build student knowledge of Australia's natural environment and/or Indigenous cultural heritage
• provide opportunities for meaningful spoken interactions outside the classroom
• provide opportunities to use written English in a non-classroom context

Activity Sheets and teachers' resources

The following Teachers' Resource Packs have been produced specifically for ESL and adult literacy students:

• Discovering Australia through the Australian Museum
• Discovering Indigenous Australians through the Australian Museum

Materials developed for primary or secondary school students may also be used by English language groups. Find out more about what is available for Primary students or Secondary students.

Discovering Australia through the Australian Museum

This resource pack has three sections as outlined below:

Section 1: Preparing for the Museum visit

This section contains orientation activity sheets to complete before visiting the Museum.

Section 2: At the Museum

This section contains a variety of activity sheets based in different parts of the Museum. Students may choose from activity sheets based in the following exhibitions:

• Skeletons: frameworks for survival
• Planet of Minerals
• Birds
• Insects and other invertebrates
• Museum guide maps

Section 3: Back in the classroom

This section contains units of work based on various text types that are to be completed back in the classroom.

Discovering Indigenous Australians through the Australian Museum
