This site contains a database of the type holdings of the Australian Museum Arachnology collection.
The database will be of primary interest to scientists working in the field. However, non-scientists are more than welcome to use it.
The database lists types by the scientific name under which they were originally described. At this stage the senior synonym (current valid name of the species) is not given. Some of the scientific names listed are no longer in use.
Each record contains order name, family name, type name, type status, author, description date, AMS registration number and collection locality. A small number of records lack author and /or description date. These are old types which were not well labelled and this information has not yet been traced.
If a query results in more than one record, the types are listed in a brief format. More detailed data can be found on each type by clicking on the registration number.
The Arachnology database has developed over many years. Understandably however, there are likely to be some errors. Use the information with discretion and if you would like further details, or have found errors, contact Graham Milledge, the Collection Supervisor.
Each has been recorded as representing holotype, paratype, syntype, lectotype, paralectotype, neotype, allotype, cotype, type and type var material. Following are definitions of these terms:
Definitions of all these terms can be found in the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature.
