Who uses search & discover?

People just like you. Our visitors come from all over Sydney, New South Wales, Australia and the world. Our visitors are all ages.

You also use search & discover from your home, work or school. You ring us up, send us letters and visit us on the Web.

You may have many different reasons for visiting search & discover online. Maybe you're here as part of a general surf of the Australian Museum's website. Maybe you're looking for specific information. Please answer this online survey to help us find out more about you.

Everyone

Visitors

Visitors to search & discover have the opportunity to satisfy their curiosity by examining the wide variety of specimens, using the microscopes and CD-ROMs, consulting books and databases, and exploring the Internet. search & discover displays a number of live invertebrates. These vary seasonally but include Spiny Leaf Insects, beetles, spiders, yabbies, crabs, and animals brought in by members of the public.

Visitors can also talk with staff to obtain general scientific information, or for help in identifying an animal they may have encountered at home, or on a walk.


Preschoolers

search & discover has lots of resources for small children. We have live animals such as the Spiny Leaf Insects, beetles, spiders, yabbies, and crabs. Children can touch and compare the softness of a wombat and koala, gently stroke the feathers of the wedge-tailed eagle, and feel crocodiles, snakes, lizards, kangaroos, and possums.

We have a large range of children's books with animal pictures and stories as well as CD-ROMs, such as Insects, Dangerous Creatures, and Dinosaurs.


Primary and Secondary Students

search & discover welcomes enquiries from students of all ages and levels. It is an ideal place for individuals or small groups of students to research a topic in which the Museum has expertise, such as geology or biology.

Information is organised so that students can find it themselves or staff can help students easily find an appropriate resource.


Teachers and Home School Groups

search & discover has resources to help prepare work modules on a wide variety of topics, such as the environment, dinosaurs, fossils, geology, insects, and Aboriginal culture.

Resources are also available to make mini-lessons combining the use of specimens, books, information from CD-ROMS, video, or posters.

A photocopier is available - 20c per page for black and white, $3 per page for colour.


Tertiary students

Resources in search & discover can be used to locate information for assignments - for example, books, journals, specimens, CD-ROMs, and maps. Information can be photocopied or printed out from the Internet.

If a greater depth of information is needed students can visit the Australian Museum's Research Library, located on Level 3 of the Museum, open from 9.30am-12.30pm, 1.30pm-5pm Monday-Friday.

A wide variety of resources and staff are available seven days a week to help researchers locate relevant resources. These include:
