The Partners

In 2003, the Australian Museum and Rio Tinto started to work together on the BioMaps project. Following this, a complementary partnership was developed between the Museum and the Rio Tinto WA Future Fund to work on a regional case study - the Pilbara BioMaps project. More recently a partnership with the Coal & Allied Community Trust has been established to enable the Hunter Valley community to participate in biodiversity research.

The Australian Museum and Rio Tinto

The Australian Museum and Rio Tinto are now working together to increase Australia's knowledge of biodiversity and develop new ways to apply this information to natural resource management.

The partnership programs

The partnership programs focus on biodiversity assessment of pastoral and mining leases. This is significant because biodiversity assessment programs typically focus on protected areas rather than lands used for production. Three partnership programs are operating at the national, regional and local community level. They are:

BioMaps: National program
Developing Australia's biodiversity map by 2007

BioMaps: Pilbara regional case study
Practical demonstration in a regional setting

BugWise
Community participation in biodiversity research in the Hunter Valley
