Our rarest entomology book?

Author and illustrator of the two volume Icones Ornithopterorum, [1890-1910] a monograph on the Bird-wing butterflies, Robert H F Rippon took 20 years to produce thirty sets of this lavishly illustrated work. Rippon himself hand coloured each of the 100 lithographed plates and text illustrations of the large bird-wing butterflies. It was unusual for an author to do all the colouring as illustrated books were more usually sent out to colouring firms where teams of colourists worked on the plates. Because so few copies of this lavishly illustrated work were produced, Rippon's is one of the rarest entomological works.
