In the 16th century plagiarism was rife, and artists copied one another's work constantly. This interesting conglomeration of whales and sea monsters from Lycosthenes' work, Prodigiorum ac ostentorum..., has been lifted, animal by animal, from a work by Conrad Gessner, published in 1554 and continually used by others for the next two centuries.
