A selection of opalised plant cones and a slice through an opalised branch of a tree. The cones come from Late Cretaceous rocks of Lightning Ridge, northern New South Wales, and the wood slice comes from an opal field in central Queensland. All of the original plant material has been replaced by silica (SiO2) in the form of opal.
