Sandy Ingleby has been the Collection Manager of the Mammal section at the Australian Museum since 1996. Her association with the Museum goes back more than 20 years. In 1978 Sandy worked part-time in the Mammal section while studying for her Bachelor of Science (Zoology) Degree at Macquarie University. She later completed her Honours degree and PhD at Macquarie University. Her PhD, sponsored by the Northern Territory Conservation Commission, involved travelling across large parts of northern Australia in order to document the distribution, diet and habitat preferences of two species of poorly known marsupials, the Northern Nailtail Wallaby, Onychogalea unguifera, and the Spectacled Hare-wallaby, Lagorchestes conspicillatus.
During the late 1980s she returned to the Australian Museum, to survey the bat fauna of Fiji and the Solomon Islands as part of the Museum's South West Pacific Survey. This project led to the description of a range of new species and to the book Mammals of the South Pacific by Dr Tim Flannery.
