Mammals

Sydney mammals database

The Mammal Database contains records of mammals collected from the Sydney region. It lists information about each specimen such as its registration number (a unique number assigned to each specimen when it is entered into the collection), the scientific classification (Family, Genus and Species), common name, where and when it is was collected, and the date it was entered into the collection, as well as its current conservation status.

This shortened version of the actual database contains additional information such as the 'form' of the specimen (whether it is a skin, skull, or specimen preserved in ethanol), its body measurements, age, sex etc.

This database contains records of 1485 mammal specimens belonging to 89 different species that occur, or once occurred in the Sydney region. The records allow us to follow changes to the mammal fauna of Sydney over the last 150 years.

Some of these changes constitute the complete loss of species from the Sydney area while others show their contraction to small pockets of remaining habitat. One of the most profound of these losses is shown by specimen M 8382, an Eastern Quoll, (Dasyurus viverrinus) found dead on the road at Nielson Park in Vaucluse in 1963. This record represents the last known individual of this species recorded from mainland Australia, although this species still survives in Tasmania.
