snails and sea-slugs: molluscs

Melanoides aspirans

Melanoides aspirans. Although most cerithioideans are marine, the Thiaridae, to which Melanoides belongs, is an important freshwater group with numerous species worldwide. As in this species, thiarid shells often have the spire broken off. It has been suggested that this is related to the low levels of calcium carbonate available for shell construction in many freshwater streams. The white eggs on the shells are probably those of nerite snails (40mm).
