snails and sea-slugs: molluscs

Phalium pyrum

Phalium bandatum. The sand dwelling cassids are caenogastropods which have evolved to feed on echinoderms, such as starfish and sea-urchins. Quite common in south-eastern Australia, this species is seldom seen except when washed up on sandy beaches after storms (50mm).
