snails and sea-slugs: molluscs

Nodilittorina unifasciata

Nodilittorina unifasciata. Despite the harsh conditions in which they live, high on rocky shores, periwinkles are often extremely abundant. To avoid their eggs being 'fried' on the hot dry rocks, this species has evolved floating egg capsules which are dropped directly into the sea water, either on extreme high tides or into high tidal pools (15mm).
