snails and sea-slugs: molluscs

Cellana tramoserica

Cellana tramoserica. Not all snails have coiled shells. The 'limpet' shape has developed many times during snail evolution. On intertidal rocky-shores, two families of limpets (Patellidae, Lottiidae) are important algal grazers. They often dominate areas of the shore. Through their regular grazing, areas of shore can be kept bare of all but microscopic algae. This species is common in temperate Australia (40mm).
