Derek Smith

Technical Officer

Qualifications

Bachelor of Science (Honours) Australian National University

I studied Zoology, Botany and Ecology at the Australian National University. I then spent three months working as a volunteer at the Australian National Insect Collection, sorting Collembola (springtails) that were collected from a variety of habitats all over Australia. Later work included sorting and identifying insects from ecological projects that measured the effects of disturbance (fire or grazing) on invertebrate fauna. This work required identifying a wide range of insects.

Since working at the Australian Museum, I have been involved with the identification and curation of the ants in the Museum's insect collection. I am currently working on the description of several new species of ants from New South Wales and Lord Howe Island.
