Qualifications
Bachelor of Science (Honours) Agricultural Zoology, University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne
PhD (Zoology), Australian National University
My mother taught me how to set moths at the age of six and somewhat later my grandmother let me pull apart her rockery in the pursuit of fossils. While at school in Ulster I was lucky to be involved with a group of natural history enthusiasts from an early age, especially Anthony Irwin (now at Norwich Castle Museum), Robert Nash (Ulster Museum), Alan Knox (University of Aberdeen) and the Copeland Bird Observatory. For a while I thought I was going to be an ornithologist, but I grew up and became an entomologist instead.
Research Interests
See publication list for full details of publications.
- The evolution of beetles (Coleoptera) especially leaf-beetles (Chrysomeloidea) (see Reid 1995 and 2000a). Australia has approximately 3000 species of Chrysomeloidea, many undescribed, giving plenty of scope for taxonomic work (see Reid, 1989, 1992b, 1994b, 1999a and 2003). An important aspect of chrysomeloid systematics is the morphology of immatures (see Reid 1991, 1992a and 1993.)
- I have done some collecting in Indonesia and was involved in sorting the entire beetle collection in the Museum Zoologicum Bogoriense (Cibinong, Indonesia) to family in 1999. I have described a few species from this region (see Reid 1994a, 1998a, 1998b and 2001).
- My work on leaf-beetles has led to participation in projects concerning general ecological and conservation issues (see Reid 1999b; Reid, Hunt and Gullan 1995; Reid, Faith and Hunter 2004; and Reid et al 2003).
- Since 1996 I have also been working on scarabaeoids. These are a bit larger than leaf-beetles, but no easier taxonomically and no less diverse in Australia. Many species are flightless and show interesting biogeographic patterns (see Reid 1999c and 2000b).
- Outside of entomology I have also published studies on topics such as Sumatran wedding ceremonies and the birds of Colombia (see Thristiawati and Reid 2002; and Reid, in Espin & Varty (eds) 1986).
