Like many entomologists my interest in insects began when I was quite young. After a brief career in teaching I pursued my interest in entomology. In the early 1960s it was difficult to obtain insect collecting equipment in Australia. This led to me to establish Australian Entomological Supplies, a company that grew from very modest beginnings into a substantial supply house which I sold to its present owner, Alan Fraser, in 1972. Around this time there was a need for an entomological journal in Australia that catered for shorter research papers. To fill this gap I started Australian Entomological Magazine, a refereed journal with the first issue launched in time for the 14 th International Congress of Entomology being held in Australia in 1972. In 1988 I passed it to the Queensland Entomological Society and it now continues as the Australian Entomologist.
I had been a Research Associate of the Australian Museum for many years and in 1990 joined the permanent staff as Collection Manager of Entomology. I retired from this position in 2003 to undertake full time research and continue at the Museum as a Research Fellow.
