Fishes - Australian Museum Fish Site

The Fish Department - Fieldwork

Solomon Islands, 1998

The vast majority of the fishes collected during the survey were less than 6cm in length.

The image shows a 5cm long Chinstrap Jawfish Opistognathus n. sp (Family Opistognathidae).

Jawfishes have very large mouths, hence the common name. Some species live in burrows with only the large head visible. The specimen in the image was collected at Ndendo Island, Solomon Islands.
