Fishes - Australian Museum Fish Site

The Fish Department - Fieldwork

Solomon Islands, 1998

One of the strange-looking fishes collected at Lakao Island was the Ornate Pipefish, Halicampus macrorhynchus.

This species is very difficult to see underwater because of the blotched colouration and dermal (skin) flaps. These flaps along the dorsal surface (back) of the fish and under the snout give the fish an irregular outline.
