Fact sheets

"Is this a Cane Toad?"

The answer to this question is NO. This is a Banjo Frog, one of a number of native Australian frogs which are commonly mistaken for cane toads. It is a harmless burrowing frog which inhabits central New South Wales. This frog has been featured in two newspapers (the Sydney Morning Herald and the Telegraph Mirror) and a TV program (Totally Wild) in an attempt to raise public awareness of native frogs.

Cane toads were introduced to Australia in 1935, in an unsuccessful attempt to control the sugar cane beetle. The toads have since become a major pest.
