The Gold & Sacrifice exhibition brings priceless objects from ancient Peru to the Australian Museum in Sydney. It examines the societies of the central Andes and adjacent Pacific coast from the simple, yet artistic, communities of 3000 years ago to the grandeur of the Incas, the only true empire in the Western Hemisphere. The exhibition gives a unique insight into the little known societies that preceded the Incas, and on which Inca civilisation was built.
The artefacts on display were mostly found at burial sites and were made by the most gifted artists for the exclusive use of the elite. As well as being beautiful in their own right, these objects tell us about power structures, ritual sacrifices and belief in the afterlife. They are symbols of the supernatural, instruments of power and providers of wealth.
This exhibition comes to the Australian Museum from the Museo Arqueological Rafael Larco Herrera in Lima, Peru. This private Museum is the only institution to hold representations of every part of the Moche sacrifice ceremony, many examples of which will be shown in this priceless exhibition.
Gold & Sacrifice: Treasures of Ancient Peru will be on show at the Australian Museum from 25 October 2003 to 26 January 2004, with a guided audio tour to be provided by Acoustiguide. The exhibition is sponsored by the Peruvian National Institute of Culture and the Rafael Larco Herrera Archaeological Museum with the assistance of the Embassy of the Republic of Peru.
