Australian Museum Evolutionary Biology Unit

The Evolutionary Relationships of Centipedes

Electron microscopy is an essential tool for investigating the evolutionary relationships of centipedes. In this project centipede phylogeny is being investigated using a combination of DNA sequence data and morphological characters. The morphological component of this work has been greatly enhanced by the ability to examine structures in detail. Electron microscopy also plays a vital role in taxonomic research on Australian "stone centipedes" (Lithobiomorpha). The scanning electron microscope is used to identify and document morphological features of taxonomic value in these centipedes.
