Australian Museum Evolutionary Biology Unit

Can Phylogeny Reveal Ancient Geography?

Cladistic tests of "deep" areas of endemism for the Australian biota and Gondwanan biogeography

This is a museum-wide project, the role of the Evolutionary Biology Unit being the collection of molecular data for an independent confirmation of relationships within some groups. The hydrobiid snails are a large group of ancient freshwater snails which occur in all areas of interest, and have been studied extensively by Winston Ponder and co-workers. DNA extraction has been carried out on twenty taxa from this group, and fragments of the 16S, 18S, and cytochrome oxidase genes have been sequenced. Analysis of sequences is currently being performed.
