Earth Alive

Hands on for lifeWith over one million different plant and animal species, and hundreds of ecosystems, Australia is recognised internationally as a key centre of life on Earth. But, our biodiversity is in trouble. The independent National State of the Environment Report found that the on-going loss and decay of biodiversity as Australia's biggest environmental problem.

Yet, too few Australians know About the true worth of this natural heritage. Market research has shown that most people think that biodiversity loss is something that is happening in the Brazilian Amazonia or the Australian outback, not in their regional backyard. Indeed, only 1 in 10 Australians even knows what biodiversity means.

Earth Alive! National Biodiversity Month aims to turn this around by providing a national focus to celebrate our rich and unique biodiversity, and promote what all Australians can do to help conserve it. Biodiversity month is held in the first month of Spring, and also embraces National Threatened Species Day on 7 September, the day the last Thylacine (Tasmanian Tiger) died.
