What is Earth Sciences

Earth Science at the Australian Museum falls into two sections; Mineralogy/Petrology, and Palaeontology. In the former, research focuses on "hot spot" volcanic rocks and related earthquake activity in eastern Australia and associated minerals and gemstones. Palaeontology research features the evolution of Early Palaeozoic arthropods, especially trilobites, and Early Palaeozoic vertebrates, particularly fishes. Extensive earth science collections of minerals, rocks, meteorites and fossils are used for display, research and community education.
