About the collection
The Ichthyology collection contains approximately 600,000 adult fish specimens and over 520,000 larval (baby) fish specimens. It also includes smaller collections of frozen tissues, otoliths, x-rays, skins, skeletons and cleared and stained specimens. The emphasis of the Australian Museum's Fish collection is on Australian fishes, Indo-Pacific reef fishes, deepsea fishes, larval fishes, gobioid fishes and freshwater fishes of New South Wales.
The collection includes 10,909 type specimens (types are the original specimens on which the first description of a particular species or subspecies is based). It also includes a Regional Larval Fish Archive that holds larvae from fishery-relevant studies. The Regional Larval Fish Archive contains over 300,000 larvae from over 8000 collection samples.
