About the collection
The Australian Museum Herpetology collection is the largest and most comprehensive of its kind in the Pacific region. More than 80 per cent of all Australian and Pacific reptile and amphibian species are represented in the collection.
The collection has more than 160,000 registered specimens of reptiles and amphibians from New South Wales, Queensland, Northern Territory, Papua New Guinea and the islands of the South Pacific. The collection holds over 3800 type specimens, including 541 primary types (types are original specimens on which the first description of a particular species or subspecies is based).
