It is made of silicon and oxygen. This variety of quartz is called amethyst.

Las Vigas Mine, Las Vigas, Vera Cruz, Mexico.
What is it used for?
High quality amethyst can be cut as precious stones. Poor quality amethyst is a source of silica for making glass, paints and abrasives.
