Australian bird list - section 3
Columbiformes -- Coraciiformes
Pigeons and Doves -- Kingfishers, Rollers and Bee-Eaters

Previous Section

This list includes those species of birds that have been recorded from the Australian mainland, Tasmania, island territories and surrounding waters. It is based on 'The Taxonomy and Species of Birds of Australia and its Territories' by Leslie Christidis and Walter E. Boles (1994. Royal Australasian Ornithologists Union Monograph 2). To it have been added any new species for which records have been accepted by the Records Appraisal Committee of Birds Australia. It omits records of vagrant species not yet accepted, ship-assisted species, introduced species that were established but are now extirpated and species cited in the literature that are now not accepted. No attempt has been made to incorporate taxonomic revisions subsequent to Christidis and Boles; that list is currently being revised and any changes will be reflected here when it is published.

All species without a superscript have been recorded from the mainland, Tasmania or surrounding waters, either breeding or as regular migrants. Species that are mainly reported from, or occur only on, island territories are marked with the appropriate regional superscript:

LH

=

Lord Howe Island

N

=

Norfolk Island

M

=

Macquarie Island

H

=

Heard Island

C

=

Christmas Island

CK

=

Cocos-Keeling Island

TS

=

Torres Strait islands

If a species occurs on the mainland (not as a vagrant) and also on an island territory, it is not listed with a superscript.

The following superscripts are descriptive:

V

=

Vagrant (less than 10 records in total)

V*

=

More than 10 records on the mainland but breeds only on island territories within Australia

I

=

Introduced

E

=

Extinct

A '/' signifies a combination; for example, N/E is a species recorded from Norfolk Island that is now extinct.
