Tour of collections - Introduction
A natural history museum has a range of displays for public viewing and, less well known, a collection of specimens held elsewhere that can be considered as a repository of a sample of the natural heritage of the country. The Australian Museum holds more than 60.000 bird specimens, most accumulated since the 1860s.These are held in several areas of the Museum according to how they have been prepared. Most are kept in sealed cabinets in the main collection area. These help keep light, dust and insects away from the specimens. The collection room has temperature and humidity control to further protect the specimens.
