Ancient StarchRobin TorrenceIn order to improve methodology for the classification of ancient starch granules found in archaeological sites, the research team of Robin Torrence, Rebecca Conway and Professor Richard Wright are conducting multivariate analyses of measurements on modern starch grains made using computer image analysis. The preliminary results show that many taxa can be distinguished successfully. Two international meetings of the Ancient Starch Research Group, initiated by Torrence, have been held at the Australian Museum. Collaborative research, with scholars from the USA, on the analysis of starch granules from ancient soils is ongoing. Torrence is currently involved in editing a manual for the archaeological analysis of starch to be published by the group.
