The majority of the African collection represents people from the east, including Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya, and the south, particularly Namibia and South Africa. The Museum also holds material from Egypt, Sudan and Somalia, Morocco, Mali, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Nigeria and Zaire. The Museum's significant Bowmore art collection represents in detail the diverse artistic and sculptural styles of nearly 30 cultural groups from West and Central Africa.
The Australian Museum has a large collection of Egyptian archaeological material from a range of both Predynastic and Dynastic periods. The Egyptian archaeological material is currently on loan to the Macquarie University's Museum of Ancient Culture and the University of Sydney's Nicholson Museum.
Those interested in gaining access to these collections for research, exhibition, education or other purposes should direct their enquiries to Rebecca Conway, Project Officer for the Asia / Africa / Americas Collections.
