Shaun's introduction to the Australian Museum was via stints as a volunteer for the Fish Department in early 1998.

Between mid 1998 and late 1999, Shaun worked as a Technical Officer in the Fish Department, reidentifying Australian freshwater and NSW estuarine fishes in the collection as part of a Biodiveristy Enhancement Project.

Shaun took up a position with NSW Department of Primary Industries (formerly NSW Fisheries) in 2000 and began work with the Conservation Unit to produce the document Threatened and Potentially Threatened Freshwater Fishes of the Murray Darling Basin and Coastal NSW for the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).

Since 2005 Shaun has worked with the Aquatic Habitat Rehabilitation Unit (NSW DPI) specialising in instream rehabilitation works and liaising with landholders to produce fish friendly farms.
