In 2001, our research team was awarded the Kevin Stark Medal for Excellence in Coastal and Ocean Engineering by the Institution of Engineers, Australia. This award was for research into the numerical modelling of winds and waves generated by tropical cyclones that threaten the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) region (Hardy et al., 2001, 2003). We established the Atlas of Tropical Cyclone Waves in the GBR ( http://mmu.jcu.edu. au - under development).

Our research team that was the winner of the Small Business Ventures/Projects category of the 2002 Institution of Engineers, Australia, Queensland Division, Engineering Excellence Awards for the project Queensland Climate Change and Vulnerability to Tropical Cyclones: Ocean Hazards Assessment – Stage 1.

Our Research team was the winner of the 2004 Queensland Safer Communities Award and also the 2004 National Safer Communities Award that recognizes excellence and best practice in disaster management. Queensland Climate Change and Vulnerability to Tropical Cyclones: Ocean Hazards Assessment – Stage 2: Tropical Cyclone-Induced Water Levels and Waves: Hervey Bay and Sunshine Coast
