Luciano B. Mason (BE Hons, JCU), a Research Engineer at the Australian Maritime College in Launceston, is an experienced physical oceanographer who specializes in numerical, hydrographic modelling. He is collaborating with Dr Jeff Leis of the Australian Museum on developing biophysical models of larval-fish dispersal for the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage area.
Academic Qualifications:
- BE (Honours IIa), 1980, Civil Engineering, James Cook University, Townsville, QLD, Australia.
Career Summary:
- Research Engineer, 2005 –present Australian Maritime College.
- Research Engineer, 1994 –2005 School of Engineering, James Cook University.
- Research Officer, 1981 - 1993 Department of Civil & Systems Engineering, JCU.
- Graduate Engineer, 1981 Hammersly Iron, Mt Tom Price, Western Australia.
Professional Affiliations:
- Graduate Member, Institution of Engineers Australia.
Research Interests:
- Numerical modelling of tides, storm surges and other long wave motions (e.g. wind and oceanic driven currents), particularly applied to the Great Barrier Reef Region. This modelling involved the development of implicit finite difference algorithms for the solution of the depth-integrated Reynolds equations and the development of a parameterisation scheme to include the sub-grid scale effects coral reefs.
- Three-dimensional circulation modelling (both continental shelf and ocean models).
- Lagrangian schemes for mass transport; biological mass transport.
- The statistical representation of tropical cyclone induced extreme water and wave levels.
- Numerical modelling of surface gravity waves in the Great Barrier Reef Region.
- Satellite altimetry (Topex/Poseidon, Jason) and remote sensing.
Awards:
In 2001, our research team was awarded the Kevin Stark Medal for Excellence in Coastal and Ocean Engineering by the Institution of Engineers, Australia. This award was for research into the numerical modelling of winds and waves generated by tropical cyclones that threaten the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) region (Hardy et al., 2001, 2003). We established the Atlas of Tropical Cyclone Waves in the GBR ( http://mmu.jcu.edu. au - under development).
Our research team that was the winner of the Small Business Ventures/Projects category of the 2002 Institution of Engineers, Australia, Queensland Division, Engineering Excellence Awards for the project Queensland Climate Change and Vulnerability to Tropical Cyclones: Ocean Hazards Assessment – Stage 1.
Our Research team was the winner of the 2004 Queensland Safer Communities Award and also the 2004 National Safer Communities Award that recognizes excellence and best practice in disaster management. Queensland Climate Change and Vulnerability to Tropical Cyclones: Ocean Hazards Assessment – Stage 2: Tropical Cyclone-Induced Water Levels and Waves: Hervey Bay and Sunshine Coast
Consulting:
I am currently a member of the Marine Modelling Unit (MMU), based in the Australian Maritime College. The MMU performs specialist consulting work in coastal engineering, coastal circulation and wave modelling.
